Yesterday I attended the most wonderful wedding.

My two friends Emma and Mandy have been together for 8 years and decided that they want to declare their love for each other in front of their friends and family. It was an absolutely beautiful ceremony. Hands down, the best wedding I have ever attended.

Yep, they are two women. And who cares, really. Did their marriage affect anybody negatively? no? it really didn’t did it.

They did not get married to “shake things up” or to give a big “fuck you” to all those who are against gay marriage. They got married because they love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together. Just like everybody else does.

Why do people think that homosexuals have some sort of agenda when they stand up for their right to marry. They don’t. They just want to be able to legally get what every other person is entitled to. They don’t want to “destroy the sanctity of marriage”

All they want is to be able to love, without judgement.

So, why can’t people let them? There is no reason I have heard that has made me think “oh, yeah, I see where you are coming from…”

The main one is “marriage is only recognised by god when it is between a man and a woman” well, really? In this country, secular marriage ceremonies account for almost 70% of marriage. Are they also not recognised by god? They are still accepted though.

Another one is “but, how can a gay couple have children? they can’t procreate” Traditionally, no, they cant procreate. Neither can some straight couples. Some dont even want to have children. Are they fucking it up for everyone else because they don’t want to squeeze one out? no, they aren’t and its totally acceptable. Science can help provide children for those who are unable to do so the “real way”.

I’ve heard people say “but its unhealthy for a child to be brought up without both a father and a mother figure in their lives” I have heard of many people who were brought up by a single parent and they seemed to turn out just fine. I have also heard of people who had both a mother and a father and were kinda screwed up. There are happy families and not so happy families. The fact is, the child needs to be brought up in a happy environment. They need to be loved by their parents. A gay couple can do that just fine.

this one annoys me… “first we let gay people get married, then people will want to marry their sisters or their dogs!” have you ever heard of anybody wanting to marry their sister or dog? probably not. I don’t think this “incest and bestiality” thing is too widespread. So, all you people who say this, probably don’t have anything to worry about.

one more.. “all gay people want to do is have sex all the time.” Well, doesn’t everybody want to have sex? I’m pretty sure that its not only gay people who want this. Its probably because they have sex a little differently. Its still basically the same thing. Besides. You’re not going to witness the act. Gay people aren’t going to flock into the streets and start getting busy in front of you just to gross you out.

anyway, I will get off my soap box now…

So, as I mentioned earlier. My friends are in love and all they wanted to do was give each other the promise that they will be there for each other. for better or for worse. For sickness and in health. Until death do they part.

Just like everybody else does.
